We originally ventured out to Waikiki for the Spam Jam,
but it was so packed we decided to escape the crowds by going to
Waikiki Yokocho for a sit down meal instead.
(See our first visit for more visiting and parking information).
Umami Kingyo Teppan is located in the Waikiki Gourmet Food Alley;
immediately to the right of the main entrance on Royal Hawaiian Avenue.
The sight of Takoyaki got our attention right away.
Brought to our table freshly made (and steaming hot, please be careful)-- just like in streets of Osaka!
SEASONED OCTOPUS WITH WASABI-- $4.98
(it had a really nice crunch) served with a Shiso leaf.
We assumed this was a cooked dish when we first placed the order.
Suffice to say we were surprised this was raw --
but it turned out to be a delightful surprise as it was very good
and the wasabi combination really works.
GRILLED SCALLOP WITH BUTTER-- $12.98
Grilled scallops cooked to perfection in a butter sauce.
The scallops were so perfectly tender along with the cooked squid.
Tasty onions & bell peppers were a great match with the soy-type sauce.
Plated with a large scallop shell with mac salad behind it (not shown in picture).
KUROBUTA PORK & SEAFOOD OKONOMIYAKI-- $14.98
I appreciated that their sauce was just right and not overly sweet.
Lots of Bonito fish flakes adorn the top as it's brought out on a sizzling hot plate
over the Okonomiyaki and mayonnaise sauce.
BEEF GARLIC FRIED RICE-- $13.98
Their fried rice was fantastic!!
There's butter, beef, garlic, cabbage, round and green onions.
Tomato is also added for a nice splash of color.
I thought I made a decent garlic fried rice myself but after tasting this
I think I need to practice some more...
Service was very friendly and the food was excellent.
We will definitely return.
