Kirin Chinese Restaurant (Oahu) Dim Sum Review.

Today I want to share with you one of my old favorites.
I remember going to Kirin when it was still at the Ala Moana center.
But since it had moved to this current location years ago, we don't visit it as much since it's a bit out of the way
(for us anyways).

I was really craving Dim Sum so off to Kirin we went.
We were seated after a few minutes then given the Dim Sum Menu to mark off the items we want.
After, it's just a matter of being patient and waiting since everything is cooked to order.

Kirin's Dim Sum Menu

Kirin Chinese Restaurant Honolulu (Oahu)- Dim Sum Menu.
You just pick how many of each items you want.
[PROS]
  • Free Parking (2 uncovered lots).
  • Easy to order (paper list with descriptions) + full on photo menu with English for their Dim Sum.
  • Friendly service.
  • Good food.
  • Private rooms available.
  • Seafood is their specialty, but their fried items were really good too.

[CONS]
  • Not the most convenient location.
  • They open at 11am.
  • Service can be slow sometimes.

[NOTE]
  • Prices are a bit higher than Chinese restaurants in Chinatown.
  • Dim Sum is made-to-order (not the ones already cooked and heated on the carts), so there is a wait.
  • The restaurant is frequented by lots of Chinese.

Kirin Chinese Restaurant Honolulu, Seaweed Roll.
#15. Crispy Deep Fried Seaweed Roll-- $4.50. Crunchy and Crispy yet still very light. It's fried perfectly so it's not oily!

Quick Recap of the items we ordered:

#19.  Baked Curry Chicken Puff-- $3.95.  This was very delicious!  Light curry flavor, not overwhelming at all with crispy crust.
#5.  Shu Mai with Shrimp Roe-- $4.25.  Taste was really good, 1 of the 3 pieces were slightly undercooked (still very pink).
#3. Steamed Rice Flour Roll with Shrimp-- $5.95.  Soft wrapper & succulent shrimp meat.

#18.  Pan Seared Sesame Coated Beef Patty-- $3.75.  Good textural contrast of the filling and not oily.
#1.  Shrimp Dumpling-- $ 4.25.  Good texture + soft wrapper.
#10.  Steamed Beef Ball with Vegetables-- $4.25.   Served with a vinegar sauce (?).  The texture is really soft and light-- good.
#21. Deep Fried Mochi Rice Puff with Pork filling (Football)-- $3.25.  Really good taste, but we wish they packed the yummy fillings a bit more; it seemed a bit empty on the inside.

Overall, this was a very satisfying visit.
For 8 items, our total came out to ~ $36 (before tax + tip).
It wasn't 100% perfect--  If anything, service was a little slow today (but everyone was very friendly + one piece of the 3 Pork Hash we ordered was a bit undercooked)...however... Kirin still remains as one of my top favorite Dim Sum places on Oahu.

Both my Fiancé and I agreed that they do fried items very well.
