Byodo-In Temple (Oahu)

Oahu is pretty synonymous with Diamond Head, Waikiki, and sandy beaches.
But wait?  What's this about a Japanese temple?
Picture
Byodo-In; aptly named "Temple of Equality."

Nestled at the base of the 2,000 ft. Koolau Mountains, the Byodo-In Temple is surrounded by lush landscape and a massive memorial park (Valley of the Temples).

Byodo-In was constructed as a replica to celebrate the centennial of the very first Japanese immigrants arriving in Hawaii.  Although it no longer functions as a Buddhist Temple (and welcomes visitors of all faith), its worth a visit to see how breathtakingly beautiful the temple is.

The drive to get there is one of the most scenic routes on the island.   Sometimes after a downpour, you can see waterfalls gushing down from the mountain ridges as you drive by.

Built in 1968.

The replica "sacred bell."  Ringing it is supposed to bring "happiness, blessings and long life" while
driving out negativity.    The original is famous for being one of the 3 most beautiful bells in Japan.

I love the beautifully manicured landscapes, ponds and water features.

For a short while, it felt like we were in Japan again (the original 950 years old Byodo-In Temple is in Uji, near Kyoto).

Light a small incense, pray
(or not) and offer a small donation.   Then off to visit the gift shop to buy some fish food!

Black Swan.
Some of the residents of the garden include black swans (from Australia), peacocks (but we didn't see them this visit), frogs, turtles (and oh yes, Mosquitoes-- try and bring some repellent if you plan to stay a long while).

I highly recommend a visit when you need a moment of contemplation.  This is the perfect place to feel at peace.  At $3 admission, why not right?
